Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has asked the private sector and foreigners to invest in hydropower and agriculture as they were priority sectors for the government.Speaking at the inauguration of an international conference on enhancing resource effectiveness at the workplace on Tuesday, he said, "The government is committed to creating a business and investment friendly environment."
The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and the International Journal of Industrial Engineering jointly organised the seminar.
The prime minister said reform and development in the agricultural sector was imperative as many people depended on it. He added that the government aimed to produce 25,000 MW of power in 20 years. Regarding the business community's complaints about insecurity, Prime Minister Nepal said that the Home Ministry was implementing special security plans to improve the country's law and order situation. "With its implementation, the security situation will improve to a large extent," he added.
He also stressed the need for good relations between management and workers to run the factories well. He said that the government sought the participation of all government agencies, the private sector and cooperatives for the country's economic development. Regarding the massive price rise, he said that he had already directed the concerned government agencies to get tough on unjustified price hikes causing immense problems to ordinary people.
During the inaugural ceremony, officiating president of the FNCCI Suraj Vaidya said that political turmoil in the country and the global economic recession had heavily affected the country's business sector. "Without investment and a business friendly environment in the country, we cannot be competitive in the international market," he said. He also highlighted the need to use the available resources more efficiently for the development of business in the country.
